Turning with the aid of a computer

CNC turning is a method of computer-controlled material processing that consists in precise cutting off a layer of material from a workpiece using a turning tool. In this process, the blade does not move and only the workpiece moves. In this way we can obtain a workpiece with a specific shape, for example cylindrical, conical or spherical.

How can the computer help? In a CNC lathe, the machine is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC), which controls the machine tool using an automatic control system and sensors. This control is carried out in a closed system, thanks to which all the moving elements of the machine tool are corrected each time and thus return to the position defined in the programme. All operations are carried out automatically by the computer. Manual operations include, for example, setting up the machine, preparing the material for turning, setting an appropriate program and setting the zero point of this program.
