What is drilling?

Drilling is machining the material with an appropriate tool called drill. The result is a hole in shape of the used drill.

Drilling is done on stationary and portable (hand) drilling machines. The process takes place when the drill rotates, and the object does not move or vice versa – the drill does not move, and the machined object rotates. Then we can speak of drilling on the lathe. We can carry out the following operations on the lathe:

• drilling
• spot drilling
• reaming
• redrilling
• boring.

Drill is a machining tool made of stainless, high-speed steel and carbide. The following types of drills are distinguished:

• spade drills
• twist drills
• augers (wood twist drills)
• core drills
• special drills: gun drills and wood drill bits.
