Safety when working with a laser

Safety when working with a laser

In contrast to milling, laser processing should seem like a safe process. In fact, the situation with the use of a laser is a little different. Why? Because during laser processing we do not see with the naked eye such dangers as even emitted radiation harmful to the eyes and skin. Even more harmful are the gases and dusts that are produced, which enter the lungs with great ease and circulate in the body with blood, thus affecting our organs, such as the brain.

But in practice, workplaces take care of the safety of every employee operating a laser cutting machine, pointing to two aspects: the level of risk and protection measures. Three aspects are taken into account when determining the level of risk: the level of awareness of the staff, the hazards caused by the laser system and its working environment. Protective equipment includes the so-called personal protective equipment (PPE), which includes, among others, goggles, glasses, protective clothing such as coats, helmets, trousers, gloves or aprons. Choosing the appropriate protective measures should take into account the power of the laser, its mode of operation and the wavelength of the laser beam.

Training of employees is also a very important aspect. Training courses teach a lot and definitely raise the awareness of the employee in the use of the laser. For example, only qualified operators are allowed to operate class 4 lasers.

Laser cutting is as safe as never!
