What do we love stainless steel for?

Stainless steel is the most commonly used steel in industry due to its specific physicochemical properties and corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is obtained as a result of introducing appropriate alloying components into steel, e.g. chromium alloy - we obtain stainless chromium steel.

The most important reasons why stainless steel is used in industry are:

• corrosion resistance
• high temperature resistance
• shiny gloss
• possibility of using it in an aggressive environment.

4 types of stainless steel can be distinguished:

• ferritic steel
• austenitic steel
• martensitic steel
• duplex ferritic-austenitic steel.

Stainless steel is used in many branches of light and heavy industry. It is most often used for the production of components and objects that require high temperature and corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is used in the production of: dairy tanks and cisterns, tanks for petroleum products, installations in the coke or foundry industry. Instead, we have stainless steel components in our homes in the form of home fittings, cutlery, dishes and pots.

Stainless steel was only discovered in the second half of the nineteenth century in France, when it was realized that a mixture of iron and chromium protects steel against the effects of acidic substances. The patenting of the stainless steel took place in 1912 and the patent first concerned austenitic steel. The name "stainless steel" was first used by the English engineer Harry Brearley.
