Powder coating vs. traditional painting

Powder coating vs. traditional painting

Powder coating is a method in which powder paint is applied to a specific material, and is the predominant method used in most metalworking shops. Traditional painting, on the other hand, uses a special spray gun to apply liquid paint to the painted item. Powder coating uses paints with physical and chemical properties that improve adhesion to the surface, and is referred to as dry coating. In traditional painting, paint is applied by the wet method to a well-cleaned surface.

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, dry coating has more advantages and provides more benefits than the wet method. The key advantages of powder coating include higher scratch resistance and greater durability of the coating. This also results in more durable colours, and the painted surface does not flake or dull with time. A very great advantage of this method is also the saving of material and paint, thanks to suitable machines for electrokinetic or electrostatic spraying. In addition, the dry method is more friendly for both people and the environment.

The advantages of traditional painting are mainly its versatility, as it can be used to paint elements made of different materials such as wood or plastic. It is used in smaller plants because of its low equipment cost. Unfortunately, it has more disadvantages than advantages. Among the most important disadvantages is the fact that the coatings are damaged much more quickly and easily. In addition, the durability of the paint coating is much lower than that of dry coating. Paint coating is also more harmful to people and the environment.
