Stainless steel welding

Stainless steel is exceptionally resistant to corrosion, which is why it is so widely used in many areas of industry. The most popular stainless steel is austenitic steel, which has very good formability for corrosion resistance as well as good weldability. As for other types of stainless steel, ferritic steel is distinguished by low carbon content and alloying elements are chromium and molybdenum, which are hardened by heat treatment. In industry, austenitic-ferritic stainless steel is very popular and widely used. This steel is characterised by high strength and formability. The addition of nitrogen improves its weldability.

The basic criterion for selecting a welding method for stainless steel is an analysis of the basic properties of the base metal, as not all grades of stainless steel can be welded. The weldability of steel depends on its chemical composition, and the following methods are used for welding stainless steel:

• GTAW/TIG inert gas shielded arc welding
• PAW plasma arc welding
• Gas metal arc welding (GMAW)
• Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW)
• Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW)
• Laser beam welding (LBW), electron beam welding (EBW).
