Parameters affecting the laser cutting process

Laser cutting is becoming increasingly popular in metal forming companies. We too are very good at laser machining, which we carry out using a Trumpf laser cutting machine with Fiber source with 6 kW TruDisk laser. Our punching machine is a machine with state-of-the-art technological solutions that have a great impact on the entire cutting process. Fiber technology (or a fibre laser) is characterised by both a fibre optic source and a fibre optic beam guide. This solution results in high efficiency and excellent laser beam quality.

And what parameters determine the accuracy, precision and speed of the cutting process? Obviously the power of the laser, since a certain amount of energy per surface area is needed to cross the machining threshold, i.e. the point at which the material starts to melt. Therefore, we can cut materials as thick as 25 mm (e.g. aluminium or structural steel). The second parameter is the focus position and the focus diameter - these influence the power density and the shape of the cutting slot on the workpiece, where the focus diameter determines the width of the slot and the shape of the cutting slot. Another data is the nozzle diameter, which determines both the shape of the gas jet and its quantity. Choosing the right nozzle is crucial to the quality of the workpiece.

Another crucial parameter is cutting speed, which depends on the cutting task and the material to be cut. The cutting speed decreases as the thickness of the material increases, hence the rule of thumb is that the more laser power available, the faster the cut. Other important parameters are the operating mode, degree of polarisation, cutting gases and cutting pressures, as well as cutting with gas mixture.
