What is stainless steel?

Stainless steel is steel with unusual physical and chemical properties. It does not rust so it is non-corrosive which is due to addition of alloys e.g. chromium alloy is added to stainless chrome steel.

Advantages of stainless steel:

• non-corrosive
• flameproof
• heat resistant
• it is shiny
• it is easy to clean and treat
• it can be completely recycled
• economic and aesthetic
• wide range of applications in industry.

Stainless steel can be divided into:

• ferritic steel (single-phase structure)
• ferritic-austenitic steel (dual-phase structure)
• austenitic steel with the highest corrosion resistance
• martensitic steel with the lowest corrosion resistance.

There are other steel grades, such as acid-resistant steel, duplex and cast steel.
